The Hawai’i Institute for Contemporary Music Piano Competition

The competition is separated into two categories,
Young Artist (ages 15-18) and Young Professional (ages 19-24)

The competition will consist of THREE ROUNDS


Audition Round: (10-15 minutes) A CD recording is required of all students who want to enter the competition. This recording must consist of two or more contrasting works written in the 20th or 21st century. (Repertoire from the First Live Round may be used)

Repertoire Requirements for Young Artists and Young Professional


First Live Round: (15-20 minutes)
    1. A Prelude by Claude DEBUSSY OR Olivier MESSIAEN
    2. One Etude by Alexander SCRIABIN, Sergei RACHMANINOFF, OR Gyorgy LIGETI
    3. A work composed after 1970 (repertoire from CD round can be used)
Final Live Round: (25-30 minutes)
    1. *Commissioned work by Thomas Osborne
    2. Twenty minutes of music of the contestant’s choice drawing upon a diverse program of 20th and 21st century piano music. Music written before 1900 will not be allowed in the final round. (Repertoire from previous rounds can be used) A copy of the commissioned work will be sent to the contestant free of charge. Available after April 5th.
